Snug Octopus

Snug Octopus is a smart energy tariff designed for homes with storage heaters, offering lower electricity costs through optimised charging schedules. It uses off-peak electricity pricing during the overnight period (00:30–06:30) and for a one-hour afternoon boost. This schedule is tailored to charge storage heaters at times when electricity is cheaper and lower in carbon intensity.

The tariff requires a second-generation smart meter (SMETS2) and storage heaters controlled via an auxiliary load control switch. Customers provide their heating preferences during sign-up, and the system automatically schedules charging to match these settings. During charging times on the smart schedule, the off-peak rate also applies to all household electricity usage. Snug Octopus is a variable tariff, meaning prices can change based on wholesale energy costs, with advance notice provided for adjustments.
